In theory, you shouldn’t have to add fluid to an automatic transmission. However, if your transmission is leaking, even slightly, at some point you’ll have to. Here’s what you should know, from A.W. Davis Tire & Auto Center in Brazoria, TX.
When to Check/Add Fluid - You should check your fluid regularly, about as often as you check your oil. Otherwise, if the transmission begins to slip or behave erratically, check your fluid immediately, as it might be dangerously low. Continued operation of a transmission that’s low on fluid will cause permanent damage in a short amount of time.
How to Check/Add Fluid - Checking your transmission fluid isn’t as easy as checking your oil but it isn’t a difficult process. Simply ensure the car, truck, or SUV is at operating temperature, in park, and still running while you check the fluid. Don’t make the mistake of reading the fluid with the car shut off; you’ll end up overfilling it, which is just as harmful as a low fluid level.
While staying away from moving parts, pull the transmission dipstick out, wipe it down, re-insert it fully, and withdraw it again. Check for lines or markings which indicate an acceptable level. If the level is just below the line, start by adding a half a quart of transmission fluid, and recheck the dipstick. Continue adding fluid via a funnel into the dipstick tube until you’ve brought the level into the acceptable range. Replace the dipstick and you’re done!
On some cars, the fluid isn’t meant to be serviced, and professional help should be sought. If you have a vehicle like this, there won’t be a visible tube or a dipstick that can be removed to check the fluid level.
